14 ALBUMS IN 2014
There's a lot to look forward to in 2014. Howzat! is particularly excited about these 14 albums: The Alternative - the new project for Horsehead's Andy McLean and Scotty Kingman. The album, Fifteen To 50, is due next month. Australian Crawl - they're finally getting the reissue respect they deserve, starting with a new best-of on 24 Jan. Family Fold - the new project for Paul Andrews, from Howzat!'s favourite Sydney pop band, Lazy Susan. Halfway - the Brisbane band's fourth album, Any Old Love, produced by Robert Forster, is out 7 Feb. Emma Heeney - her second solo album is being produced by J Walker. Ella Hooper - a new role on Spicks and Specks and hopefully a solo album as well. Caitlin Harnett - Melody Pool's best friend has returned from Canada, brandishing her debut solo album. Charles Jenkins - Too Much Water In The Boat is due next month. Jim Keays - a sequel to Dirty Dirty. Perry Keyes - a knee injury had him out for the season in 2013, but Sydney's finest songwriter will be back with at least one album this year. Russell Morris - a Sharkmouth sequel. Skipping Girl Vinegar - Nashville's Brad Jones has been in Australia producing SGV's third album. Dan Sultan - Michael Gudinski has got the vibe, and Dan's first Liberation album should be big. Wagons - their new album is produced by Mick Harvey.

BEDTIME STORIES
The highlight of Howzat!'s holiday reading was the reissued version of The Bedroom Philosopher Diaries ($20, Affirm Press). As Dave Graney said, "Bedroom brings the pain. Full of contradictions. By turns too delicate for the world and then too harsh." An insight into the touring life of a comedian/musician, it's both dark and delightful. "Sometimes," Justin Heazlewood writes, "performing is like meeting yourself for the first time and not being that into it." His job is no laughing matter. "Do they not realise how seriously you have to take life to squeeze the humour from it?" He hates hecklers. "If anyone's going to ruin my show, it's me." After a homecoming gig in Burnie, he asks his Nan if she liked it. "Well," she replies, "it's our fault if we didn't." After breaking big with Northcote, The Bedroom Philosopher is now living in Sydney. "Time to write 'Songs From The 423 Bus'," he says. A new book, Funemployed, will be out in June.
