CROWNING GLORY
Monique Brumby is a true artist. When Howzat! first saw her, she was playing with Jeff Buckley at the Athenaeum and had just signed to Sony. Despite winning the prestigious Best Female Artist trophy at the ARIA Awards, Monique's major label experience didn't really work out. But she has never stopped making music. On 19 July, Monique launches her fifth album, a self-titled set, at the Northcote Social Club. "Time moves us all on," she sings. But this album finds Monique at the peak of her powers. "It was probably the most difficult album to make because I set myself a very high benchmark in terms of the production and arrangements," Monique explains. She worked on the album for three years, co-producing with Nick Larkins. "I knew from the outset that as a self-professed perfectionist I was not going to settle for production or mixes that were just okay." Indeed, she sings: "I'm so hard on myself, I'm harder than anyone else."

When Howzat! catches up with Monique, she's on the roadside at Conara in Tasmania, heading for her grandmother's 90th birthday. She wrote one of the album's standout songs, The Crown, at her grandma's house. "My grandmother has been a pillar of strength in my life," Monique explains, "my number one supporter, my confidant and dear friend." Thinking about her grandma's life - growing up on King Island, surviving floods and fires, serving in the Air Force in World War II, and losing many friends and family members - inspired the line: "You've got a way to go if you wanna wear the crown". "What I've learned from her and what is reflected in the song is you don't have to fight to be heard, you just have to give and love and try to do the best you can with what you have at the time. And only one thing is worth fighting for and that is love." There's a lot to love about Monique Brumby. She's a stunning singer, a compelling storyteller and an Essendon supporter. And she's a survivor. "You must be prepared for ebbs and flows, highs and lows, knockbacks and triumphs," she says. "It's all part of being a musician and putting yourself out there." Then she adds: "Can I also say that the rewards far outweigh the sacrifices."

GREAT SCOTT
The legendary Bon Scott would have been 68 today (9 July). To celebrate Bon's birthday, Nick Barker is starring in Hell Ain't A Bad Place To Be - The Bon Scott Story at Cherry Bar in AC/DC Lane on Saturday (12 July).

BIG BEN
A Ben Lee crowd is like a love-in. Last Wednesday's Howler show was one of the gigs of the year. He's promising to be back in November when he releases his new album, Love Is The Great Rebellion.
