MILESTONES AND MEMORIES
The Bee Gees scored their first UK chart-topper, with Massachusetts hitting number one this week in 1967. When they wrote the song, the Bee Gees had never been to Massachusetts.

Flowers released their debut album, Icehouse, this week in 1980. The band would later become known as Icehouse.

INXS released their self-titled debut album this week in 1980.

Jimmy Barnes’ debut solo album, Bodyswerve, hit number one in Australia this week in 1984.

Richard Clapton and Jimmy Little were inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame this week in 1999.

Cold Chisel’s Light The Nitro Tour kicked off in Newcastle this week in 2011.

Happy Birthday to Brian Mannix, who is 57 on October 7, and Gabriella Cilmi, who is 27 on October 10.

And we remember Australian opera diva Dame Joan Sutherland – one of the first ARIA Hall of Fame inductees – who died in Switzerland, of heart failure, aged 83, this week in 2010. And this week in 2001, Australian singer Peter Doyle died of cancer, aged 52. He had been a member of The New Seekers and The Virgil Brothers, and reportedly knocked back the chance to be LRB’s first lead singer.
