INNER WESTERN UNION MAN
Dan Lethbridge has had three great album titles: 2008's Dreamers of the World Unite, 2012's Oh Hawke and his new album, Inner Western. "My album titles are always a combination of meaning a lot and absolutely nothing - all at the same time," Dan smiles. "The new album was recorded in Melbourne's inner west, I live in Melbourne's inner west, and I'm from the inner west of Queensland. That's three reasons, but the real truth is I just like the sound of it." Dan grew up on a 6000-acre cattle property. Indeed, he's just had 10 days back home. "I miss it greatly and it gets harder to leave every time. The property has been in our family for three generations, so it's something very dear to me. It will always be my home." Dan doesn't make country music, but these are songs sturdy and true, heartfelt and honest. Inner Western features a delightful duet with The Audreys' Taasha Coates, Everybody Says. "I toured with The Audreys last year and we recorded the vocals the morning after the Melbourne show. Taasha was pregnant at the time and was very easily bribed with the promise of chocolate croissants." It's the only duet on the record, though another song, Wait Another Day, showcases the gorgeous violin playing of The Tiger & Me's Jane Hendry. Dan sings, "Honesty's a curse, it eats you from the inside out." He explains: "Wait Another Day is about picking your partner apart for no reason. It's something I often do at the start of a relationship and it's a curse. You know, trying to find faults in someone's personality, instead of just letting them be themselves. It's a horrible thing to do, because we all have faults." Produced by Shane O'Mara, Inner Western is compelling. Dan Lethbridge & The Campaigners launch the album at Shadow Electric on Saturday, 10 Oct. What's the one lyric that sums up the album for Dan? "Love is the only thing left."

STAND BY YOUR DAN
Dan Lethbridge jokes that one in every three Melbourne musicians is named Dan. And this month sees four Dans release albums - Dan Lethbridge, Dan Flynn, Dan Parsons and Dan Kelly. "We really need to start an annual Dan Fest," Lethbridge laughs. "It could be bigger than the Big Day Out."
