TODAY I AM A DAISY
How do you deal with the Difficult Second Album syndrome? Well, you release your second album first, and your first album second. Huh? Livingstone Daisies (Van & Cal Walker, Liz Stringer and Michael Barclay) recorded two albums at their friend's beach shack in Inverloch, and decided to release the second album as their debut - last year's sparkling Don't Know What Happiness Is. And this year they're planning to release the "first" album, with the help of a Pozible campaign (running until 17 February). The band is inviting fans to become part of "The Burlap Underground". Burlap is the American term for hessian, and the word popped up in the Rolling Stone review of Don't Know What Happiness Is: "The main man's burlap voice doesn't serve their paisley intentions," the reviewer reckoned. "We wanted to come up with a name to call our community of supporters and Burlap Underground seemed like a good one," guitarist Liz Stringer explains. Is Liz a fan of crowd-funding? "I am now," she smiles. "I was a bit sceptical at first, as I think a lot of my peers were. The prospect of asking fans for money seemed too uncomfortable - I think us artists are used to being almost maniacally self-sufficient but then I got over myself!" For $10, a fan will get a digital download of the album and their name in the liner notes; for $750, Livingstone Daisies will play at your house. The new album concludes with a song called Pistol Pete. Initially, Howzat! thought it was a tribute to tennis great Pete Sampras, but Liz explains it's about basketballer Pete Maravich. "Van and Cal were both champion basketballers as kids," she reveals, "and Van wrote the song many years ago." If you're a fan of classic jangle pop, you'll dig this record. It sits comfortably alongside Tom Petty, Teenage Fanclub, Elvis Costello, The Replacements and the Icecream Hands. And, after a sneak preview, we're pleased to report that the second album is even stronger than the first - or the first is better than the second you know what we mean.
