QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
It's one of the great singles of 2014 - The Evening Cast's Questions. If this was the single from Coldplay's latest album, it would be a worldwide smash. It's dramatic and moody but with glorious hooks. It sounds like an epic, but it's just 3.08 minutes. "The more that I try, the more I realise that I know nothing," Joel Cooper sings. "And it's wearing me down." The Evening Cast - which also features Joel's wife, Rachel, and his brother Paul - are onto a winner. "It wasn't until the very end of the whole writing process that we knew it was really special," Joel says. "We spent lots of time with it, really pulling it apart and it kept growing every time we would come to it. We invested in the lyrical content, and wanted everything to sit right. I can remember clearly the first moment we played it fully we were just beaming with excitement. It was that moment we knew we had found our single and found what we wanted to say to our listeners." The Evening Cast deserved some luck. At the start of last year, as they were getting set to launch their debut EP Lake, Joel and Rachel's house burned down. Ironically, the EP featured a song called Smoke And Fire. "We took a month off, but one of the first things I wanted to do was start playing again," Joel says. "It was probably one of the only things I felt like doing. It was a way for me to reconnect and express how I was feeling, without conversation or directly talking about it. We also had a lot of support from the music community, so we felt very embraced." Indeed, the band's biggest fan is Clare Bowditch, who says: "When I listen to songs by The Evening Cast, I am struck with the sensation: Oh! Yes! These kids are absolutely extraordinary." One listen to Questions and you have to agree. The Evening Cast launch the single on Saturday, 7 June at The Grace Darling.

FIELDS OF GOLD
It's been a long time coming, but Georgia Fields' second album is taking shape. She has launched a Pozible campaign to finish the record, which she's planning to call Astral Debris. If you want a customised Georgia Fields tambourine, or a ukulele lesson, check out her Pozible campaign, which concludes 12 June. Georgia is working with producer Tim Shiel (aka Faux Pas). "A mutual friend, Ben Birchall, introduced us via email," she explains. "Ben thought Tim would be a great production collaborator, and he was right! In one of our first meetings, his cat, Jamie Oliver, peed on me, which I took to be a good omen."

50 YEARS
Happy Birthday to Andy McLean, the singer in Howzat!'s all-time favourite band, Horsehead. Andy is 50 on 5 June. He recently released an album, Fifteen To 50, with new band The Alternative.
