AMATEUR STATUS
The title is misleading. For a start, Amateur Hour runs for only 30 minutes. And secondly, there is nothing amateurish about the program. This is the show we had to have. Did you know that this week's ARIA Top 40 features just two Australian singles? If you're reading this publication you're aware that we're blessed with homegrown talent. It just needs some exposure. Unfortunately, television is a wasteland for emerging artists. "It's kind of embarrassing that Australia has nothing," indie star Laura Imbruglia says. "We miss Recovery. We miss Countdown. We even miss Hey Hey." So Laura decided to do something about it. She has started a web show, Amateur Hour, which launched this week (head to amateurhour.tv). The first episode features live performances by Miss Eileen & King Lear and The Gin Club, a cooking segment with Laura Jean (who turns frozen bananas into ice-cream), comedy skits, a chat with Ouch My Face's Celeste Potter, and music memories with the Hard-Ons' Ray Ahn. It's beautifully shot, with a stylish but unpredictable feel, and Laura is a wonderfully droll host - "I've never interviewed anyone before," she admits to Miss Eileen & King Lear.

Laura estimates she spent just $500 on making six episodes. "Everyone worked for free," she explains. She hopes that a TV network or streaming service will pick up the program, so she can make a second series. Regarding the name, Laura says she initially intended to call the show "Scrapbook", but that business name was already registered. "I wanted something that would communicate the amateur nature of the production, though it has turned out to look pretty professional; I had no idea it would look like that! We ended up landing on Amateur Hour. It seems to tick all the boxes. Not only are the people who have made the show amateurs, but many of the people featured on screen may be considered amateurs, as they don't live off their art. It's kind of a sarcastic title, as they are revealed to be far from amateur." Indeed, this is great viewing. Amateur Hour is a blast of fresh air.

KING LEO
It irks Howzat! that TV producers prefer second-rate international "stars" to local talent. The Madden brothers as singing experts? Why hasn't The Voice or The X Factor mined the talents of Leo Sayer? Not only is Leo a local, he's a true international superstar.

P.S. We're loving Dan Lethbridge's new album, Inner Western, which will be out on 6 Oct.

HOT LINE
"You know that I need you, through the darkness I will lead you" - Lachlan Bryan & The Wildes, Afraid Of The Light.
