MILESTONES & MEMORIES
Tina Arena turns 50 today (November 1). Tina shares a birthday with John “True Blue” Williamson, who is 72.

Men At Work’s Who Can It Be Now? hit number one in the US 35 years ago this week.

John Farnham’s You’re The Voice hit number one in Australia this week in 1986, the start of a seven-week reign.

SkyhooksJukebox In Siberia topped the Australian charts this week in 1990 – the only local single to top the charts that year.

Wolfmother released their self-titled debut album and Bernard Fanning released his debut solo album, Tea & Sympathy, 12 years ago this week.

CHART WATCH
The disastrous year for Australian singles on the ARIA charts just got worse. There is not one homegrown hit in this week’s Top 40. As the Hoodoo Gurus would say, Like Wow, Wipeout. The highest-charting local hit is Vance Joy’s Lay It On Me, which landsat number 41, while Dean Lewis has the next Australian hit, with Lose My Mind debuting at 50. What’s the cause of this cultural cringe? Is it all radio’s fault? Or are Australian artists simply not releasing commercial music to compete with all the releases from overseas? Ten months gone and just four Australian singles have hit the Top 10 this year, with only 20 reaching the Top 40. Whatever the reason, this is serious.

Things aren’t quite as grim on ARIA’s album chart, with three Aussie entries in the Top 10 (we’re not sure why ARIA doesn’t classify Triple J’s Like A Version as an Australian release). Meanwhile, Gang Of YouthsGo Farther In Lightness has spent 10 weeks in the Top 40. It’s a favourite of Labor frontbencher Tony Burke, who says: “It’s already one of my favourite albums of all time. Any chance I get I’ll keep telling you about it.”
