DAZED AND CONFUSED
They were talking about "modern music" during Fox Sports' Australian Open coverage. "I don't know," Wimbledon champ Pat Cash said, "after Led Zeppelin, I'm confused." Kiss' Paul Stanley says rock 'n' roll starts and ends with Zeppelin: "They wrote the book and all of us are just trying to write a page." Just days after 1972's Australian Open, Zeppelin hit Kooyong's centre court. More than 12,000 fans paid $4.20 to be part of their only Australian tour. Dallas Crane's Dave Larkin wasn't even born when Zeppelin came Down Under, and he didn't discover the band until high school - years after they broke up. "A guy in school recommended I get into Led Zeppelin and he loaned me Remasters," Dave recalls. "After that, I was sold. He never saw that copy again." Dave is now part of the Melbourne supergroup that will re-live Zeppelin's Kooyong show at the Corner Hotel on Friday. It's an all-star band - Ashley Naylor, Danny Leo, Steve Hadley and Bruce Haymes - with Dave sharing the singing with Vika Bull, Pat Carmody and the Wolfgramm Sisters. Last year, Dave did a sizzling version of Communication Breakdown on The Marngrook Footy Show. On Friday, his songs will include Heartbreaker, Rock and Roll and Dazed and Confused. "They've given me all the screamos," he laughs. Dave has had a huge start to 2014, with a re-formed Dallas Crane doing big gigs at the Espy and the Corner. And a new Crane album is coming. "I can't say exactly when, but it's well in the works, and we're hoping to drop something before the year's out."

ROCKINGHAM PALACE
No doubt Palace Of The King have a few Zeppelin records in their collection. As their bio states, they play "rock like it used to be, rock how it will be again." Cherry boss and former Inpress columnist James Young highlighted Palace Of The King when he called on triple j to play some local rock. "I am fucked if I know how you get triple j to play a quality rock song from Melbourne," James wrote. "My Dynamite, King Parrot, Airbourne, Bitter Sweet Kicks, King Of The North, Dead City Ruins, Sheriff, Archer, Palace Of The King, The Kashmere Club, My Left Boot, Matt Sonic & The High Times, A Gazillion Angry Mexicans and The Harlots are all asking themselves the same question." James is giving Palace Of The King a leg-up - they're launching their blistering new EP, Palace Of The King II: Moon & Mountain, at Cherry on Saturday.
