BEAUTIFUL NOISE
Does the noise in my head bother you? Howzat! thought of the title of Steven Tyler's autobiography when we picked up Jimi Kritzler's new book, Noise In My Head ($59.95, Melbourne Books). It's going to be hard to top this tome as the local book of the year. Documenting "The Ugly Australian Underground", it's a subjective but comprehensive snapshot of the independent sounds of 2014. Jimi doesn't glamorize the scene. Indeed, he examines rock 'n' roll's great conundrum: Do you have to be fucked-up to be fabulous? "It is plausible," Jimi writes, "that in some cases without these vices, and the complications they add to daily life, the music created wouldn't sound half as troubled, reckless, potent or innovative." The book features revealing interviews with HTRK, Eddy Current Suppression Ring, Royal Headache, The Drones, My Disco, The Stabs, Kirin J Callinan, Twerps, Dick Diver, Witch Hats and many others. And Jimi gets Chapter Music boss Guy Blackman and Geoffrey O'Connor to interview each other. "At the time you were probably fairly shy as a performer," Guy says. "Hey, I have never thought of myself as shy," Geoffrey responds. "I think because I have glasses and I am weedy, people assume that." Jimi's criterion for inclusion: "Every single band in this book has written a song or an album, or played a show that has left this (at times not so humble) writer completely in awe." It's an intensely personal selection, but Jimi can be swayed. "At first glance, Songs seemed like the archetypical Sydney band," he states. "Word had filtered down that the band was comprised of a Vogue magazine photographer, a Vogue model on paper, it didn't sound promising [but] it was difficult to deny Songs had crafted a truly engaging debut album." And Jimi has a wry sense of humour. "Wonderfuls," he writes, "would never aspire to cult status and they would piss on patronizing music critic dribble labeling them 'outsider music'." Each interview provides rare insights into the band's lifestyle and creative process. Here's hoping that Jimi - who plays in White Hex - can regularly update the book. As he says, it's a time capsule. Noise In My Head ranks alongside Clinton Walker's seminal works, Inner City Sound and The Next Thing. Essential.

MARVIN, THE SECRET
The Yarra Hotel's Facebook page said a band called Accidentally Davey Lane was playing last Tuesday. But punters discovered an act called Al Dente was actually on the bill. Of course, it was a secret warm-up gig for Frente. They were loose but poptastic, taking requests and doing dedications - playing Oh Brilliance for one of their biggest fans, The Herald Sun's Cameron Adams.
