OH, YES HE DOES
It's thrilling when an artist goes from good to great. Benny Walker has made some good records; now he's made a great record - his new single, Oh No You Don't. As he declares in the song, "I'm ready." The single is also proof that good things can happen at a buck's day. Benny met producer Jan Skubiszewski at Jan's buck's day, which was held in Benny's hometown of Echuca. They got talking - "Most of it was probably unintelligible," Benny laughs - and soon they were in the studio together. "The very first thing Jan suggested was making the piano the feature instrument as opposed to the guitar. The second he started playing the chords on piano and I sang over them, I knew we were headed in the right direction." The result is a stunning piece of pop - stark and soulful. "I used to feel as a producer that I had to fill every space," Jan says. "Now, I'm in love with space." Lyrically, Oh No You Don't is a powerful song about Benny confronting some demons. Benny was struck when he wrote the song's opening line: "Here it comes now, right on time " "I didn't know it right away, but I had just started what would become my song about feeling that I had overcome - for the most part - my own battle with anxiety. The lyrics are important to me and I wanted the listeners to hear what I had to say." Benny launches Oh No You Don't at the Gasometer on Friday, and the song has already led to four nominations at next month's National Indigenous Music Awards, including Song Of The Year. Can't wait for the album, which is coming soon. "Upon finishing the Oh No You Don't session, I recall listening back to the rough mix at home and messaging Jan to tell him how liberated I felt about this new direction we were taking my music in," Benny says. The album promises to be very special.
