ALBUMS OF THE YEAR
So many awesome albums in 2014. Here are our dozen faves:

1. DAVEY LANE - ATONALLY YOUNG
A cosmic classic. Bombastic beauty from a guy who deserves to be a solo star.

2. THE ALTERNATIVE - FIFTEEN TO 50
Horsehead lives, via singer Andy McLean and guitarist Scotty Kingman. The year's best rock record.

3. HALFWAY - ANY OLD LOVE
The Brisbane version of Perry Keyes. Classic Aussie street poetry.

4. CAITLIN HARNETT - THE RIVER RUNS NORTH
A young artist with an old soul. A companion piece to Melody Pool's masterpiece, The Hurting Scene.

5. STEPHEN CUMMINGS - NOTHING TO BE FRIGHTENED OF
Thirty years after his first solo album, this idiosyncratic artist is still at the top of his game.

6. RUSSELL MORRIS - VAN DIEMEN'S LAND
The sequel was even better than the original.

7. MIA DYSON - IDYLLWILD
Music for grown-ups. Another Mia gem.

8. EMMA HEENEY - AFTER THE FIREWORKS
Magical and melancholic. Sad songs say so much.

9. KATE MILLER-HEIDKE - O VERTIGO!
KMH continued to scale dizzy pop heights.

10. ANDY WHITE - HOW THINGS ARE
Brutally honest and revealing, a classic break-up album.

11. MIKE BRADY - BLOODLINES
No Irish joke. Mike "Up There Cazaly" Brady delivers the best album of his career.

12. MISSY HIGGINS - OZ
One of our finest songwriters does a covers album. Surprising and sublime.

And eight more albums that we also loved: Wagons' Acid Rain and Sugar Cane, Ella Hooper's In Tongues, Jack Howard's Day Of The Dog, Pseudo Echo's Ultraviolet, The Church's Further/Deeper, The Solicitors' Blank Check, Luluc's Passerby and Jeff Lang's I Live In My Head A Lot These Days.
