HALO WORLD
"Welcome to Hollywood!" the man in Pretty Woman screamed. "What's your dream? Everybody comes here - this is Hollywood, land of dreams." Melbourne's Leanne Kingwell went to Los Angeles with a musical dream, to make an album that was "a sonic movie, a musical ride that was cohesive and put the listener through many varied emotions. Something that would light fires, like mine was lit by the likes of David Bowie and Pink Floyd." She just needed a collaborator "crazy enough to share my vision". Gavin Wood - the voice of Countdown, who now calls Hollywood home - introduced Leanne to producer David J. Holman. "The first time I drove to his studio, I was thinking, 'Wow, I'm about to make an album in Wonderland Avenue with a legendary producer. How surreal is that?'" Leanne drove past Jim Morrison's house and parked opposite the site of the infamous Wonderland murders. She then sat on the couch where Gwen Stefani met Gavin Rossdale, sang in the chair Olivia Newton-John sat in to record her Grease vocals, and looked at walls filled with gold and platinum albums - No Doubt, Bush, Grease, Xanadu "Yikes," Leanne thought, "I'm just an indie from St Kilda, am I good enough to even be here?" She was. David Holman says Leanne's album, Choking On Halos (available through leannekingwell.com), is "the most exciting record I've worked on in a long time". An adventurous, thrilling trip, Gavin Wood calls it "a modern masterpiece". It has elements of Kate Bush and Bjork, though it's impossible to categorise. As well as Gavin, Leanne hangs out with a stack of Aussies in LA, including Mavis's' singer Beki Colada. "A few of us often get together in some famous, fancy Hollywood restaurant to get drunk and rowdy and confuse the shit out of the Americans with terminology like 'suck it and see' and 'no wuckas, mate'," Leanne laughs. She's now home to take the single, Slingshot, to radio. It sounds like a summer smash, but whatever happens, Leanne Kingwell's dreams have come true. "When I finally heard the finished master, I thought, 'Whew! Mission accomplished.' Then I wept with joy and went to bed for a week." No wuckas.
