SIDELINED NO MORE
Shelley Segal's new CD, Strange Feeling, features just five songs. But it packs an emotional punch. "I took your soundtrack off my shelf," she sings in the opening cut, Background Noises, "I'm making room for somebody else." It's a heartbreaking line. Does pain help Shelley's songwriting? "Absolutely," she smiles. "Pain can be so immediate and acute. I find it a lot easier to identify and express. Those are the songs that come out the quickest." Five different relationships inspired these songs. "It [making the EP] was cathartic. During my takes, I like to turn out the lights and lose myself in the stories that I am re-telling." The EP was co-produced by indie legend Lindsay Gravina. "It was an unbelievable privilege to work with Lindsay. He pushed me so hard and got performances out of me I didn't know I had." When Shelley came to record the vocals for Sidelined, a song about body image and relationships, Lindsay challenged her: "Who are you singing this to? Who are you singing it for? Is it for them? Is it for you? Be specific." The result is stunning. Strange Feeling also includes a poignant piano ballad called Leigh's Song II. "Leigh is my ex-boyfriend," Shelley reveals. "Now it's four in the morning, Leigh, and I miss you," she sings. "I have an earlier track, Leigh's Song, that was written when Leigh and I were happy together. I wrote Leigh's Song II about three years after we'd broken up. It's amazing how strong our bonds can be, even after such a long time. He hasn't heard the song, as we don't speak anymore. I have thought about sending it to him; I think I will." Strange Feeling is filled with heartache and hurt, longing and lust. But there's a happy ending: in the liner notes, Shelley thanks "my beautiful partner, Rob - I build my dreams around u". "Strange Feeling was written about when we first met and the trepidation I felt about everything going so well," explains Shelley, who is playing at the Caravan Music Club on 24 May, and the Northcote Social Club on 30 May. "He has definitely inspired me to write a lot of songs."

DAN THE MAN
It's a matter-of-fact title: I'll Live And I'll Die, but there's nothing ordinary about Dan Parsons' new single, an awesome slice of Americana. Dan is playing at the Workers Club on 21 May.

HIP HIP
Forty years ago this month, the first edition of Juke hit the streets, with Shirley Strachan on the cover. The music paper was started by the late Ed Nimmervoll, the doyen of Australian music journalists, and ran until 1993.
