LOST IN LOVE
Only love can break your heart. Ben Mitchell's new album, Chance To Love, is 17 songs about love. "I didn't set out to write a theme album," Ben says. "Having said that, the themes I naturally gravitate to are love, mortality and the never-ending struggle to find meaning in a meaningless world - you know, all that lighthearted stuff." This is a late-night gem. Ben's smoky tone tells the tale of love from many sides - love found, love lost, love missed, love overlooked and love almost forgotten. Ben - who is launching the album at the Retreat Hotel on 5 July at 5pm - drew on all of his romantic entanglements. "Honestly, every relationship I've ever had has influenced this album. But I definitely owe the most, in terms of inspiration, to the longest loving muse I've had - Pauli." Together for more than a decade, Ben's relationship with Pauli has inspired most of Chance To Love, which includes "meeting, falling in love and starting a family". But have many ex-girlfriends come forward and said, "That song is about me!"? "No one's actually said that, but one ex was pretty quick to like a song I shared on social media; I got the feeling she thought it was about her, and in some ways it might have been. The Way Of This Love is about almost getting that special relationship together but not quite making it happen, and that's pretty much what happened with her and I."

"What does it mean to be alive?" Ben asks in the title track. "What can one person do that is of real use?" Ben's had a fascinating creative life: singer, actor (Neighbours, Skirts) and author (The Last Great Day, Zippin Pippin). Few Aussie artists are as versatile. He also spent several years in London, where he recorded at AIR Studios, meeting one of his idols, Beatles producer Sir George Martin, who gave him a signed copy of Sgt. Pepper's for his birthday. "He even signed it with reference to one of my songs: 'Keep your Happy Shirt on'. That was a good day." Love is a many splendored thing.

UNFOLDED
Family Fold's debut album, Lustre Glo, will be released on 21 Aug. This is the new project for Lazy Susan singer, Paul Andrews, one of Sydney's finest songwriters. A friend of Howzat!, who has heard the record, remarked: "It's like Lazy Susan had a country-ish half-brother and sister and they got together and made a record. They could be called 'Lazy Susan Had A Sister'"

GRANDDADDY COOL
The godfather of Australian music is becoming a grandfather. Congratulations to Michael Gudinski's daughter, Kate, who posted an ultrasound picture of her 12-week-old baby on Instagram.
