PALACE OF DREAMS
Tim Henwood is one of the hardest-working people in rock. He's also wonderfully versatile, having fronted The Androids and played lead guitar with acts as diverse as Rogue Traders, Chocolate Starfish, James Reyne and the recently revived The Superjesus. Rock is undoubtedly Tim's first love. Loud and proud. A couple of years ago, a bunch of Melbourne guys were looking for a singer and they approached Tim after seeing him sing with former Kiss guitarist Bruce Kulick. A new band was the last thing Tim needed, but when he heard the instrumentals, he was vibed. He added his vocals and returned the tunes with a simple message: "I'm in." Palace Of The King's first big tour was with Aussie rock kings Airbourne, whose leader, Joel O'Keeffe, became an instant fan, calling them a "Palace of riffs, soul and rock 'n' roll" and saying they possess "more hooks and lines than a hard-working Bering Sea fishing fleet they are guaranteed to tangle you up, reel you in and blow you away". After a few EPs, Palace Of The King deliver their debut album this week. It's called White Bird/Burn The Sky, and it's everything you could hope for, with monstrous riffs, blistering grooves, a killer live vibe and Tim's Axl Rose-like snarl. Ragged glory. Palace Of The King launch the album at Cherry Bar on 4 July. Catch 'em before they head to Europe.

FOREVER YOUNG
Happy birthday to John Paul Young, who's 65 on 21 Jun.

IT NEVER ENZ
Neil Finn hasn't ruled out more Split Enz. At his recent Melbourne show, when a fan requested I Hope I Never, Neil noted, "We're all still alive. That's a positive, so don't count us out." That prompted Howzat! to think of the major local bands from the early Countdown era (1975-80). Out of the 15 main bands - AC/DC, The Angels, Australian Crawl, Cold Chisel, Dragon, Hush, INXS, Little River Band, Mental As Anything, Midnight Oil, Rose Tattoo, Sherbet, Skyhooks, Split Enz and TMG - only Split Enz, Hush, the Mentals, the Oils and LRB haven't lost key members (having said that, the late Paul Hester was the final drummer in Split Enz). Hush are sadly forgotten, a version of the Mentals is still playing, so Split Enz, the Oils and LRB are able to do reunions that are 100 per cent credible. But LRB are legally not allowed. We live in a crazy world. Wouldn't it be great if LRB's classic line-up could do something to celebrate the band's 40th anniversary?

HERTZ SO GOOD
It's the best day on the Melbourne music calendar - when the mighty Megahertz take on the Rockdogs in the Community Cup. It's at Elsternwick Park on Sunday, 21 Jun.
